PATENT

A patent is an exclusive right granted to the owner of a new invention that offers a new technical solution to a problem.

For a certain period of time, the patent holder is granted the exclusive right to commercially utilize his or her invention, to produce, sell, export.

Patent gives the patent holder the right to license or sell this right, among others.

But once the patent expires, the protection ends and the invention enters the public domain where anybody can commercially exploit the patent without infringing the right of the original patent holder.

Patent rights are territorial and can obtained through registration and registration can either be pursued in the national/local level or in the international level.

In the national or local level, applications are filed at the national or local patent office while in the international level, you can either file your applications at the national office of the country you wish to seek registration or thru the Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT) administered by WIPO that provides for a single procedure for patent registration covering several member territories.
