COPYRIGHT
Copyright is the rights the creators have over their artistic and literary creations.
Works covered by copyright ranges from paintings, drawings, films, music, books, photographs, sculpture, performance, computer programs and data bases among others.
Under copyright, the creator or author has 2 kinds of rights. One is the economic rights which grants the creator or author the exclusive right to profit from the use of his or her works and the moral rights which protects the non-economic rights of the creator or author.
Examples of widely recognized economic rights include the creator’s or author’s right to authorize or prohibit the publication of his or her work, its public performance, broadcasting, adaptation and to receive remuneration from their use.
Moral rights include the creator or author’s right to claim authorship over his or her work and to oppose changes to adaptations of his or her work that could arm his or her work.
Copyright protection is obtained automatically at the moment of creation without the need of registration, unlike Trademark and Patents.
However, in most jurisdictions systems for voluntary registration or deposit are in place to help solve disputes over ownership and help facilitate transfer of rights.
